Reversing, Manoeuvring and Turning Risk Assessment
What Does This Reversing and Manoeuvring Risk Assessment Cover?
- Pedestrian struck during reversing — vehicle reversing and striking a pedestrian in a blind spot causing fatal or serious crush injuries
- Vehicle rollover or jack-knife during manoeuvring — vehicle or trailer overturning or jack-knifing during tight manoeuvres on slopes or in restricted spaces
Each hazard includes an inherent risk rating of Substantial, and a comprehensive listing of applicable control measures covering areas such as;
- Reversing eliminated or minimised by one-way systems, drive-through arrangements and dedicated turn-around areas
- Trained banksman using agreed signals deployed for all reversing where pedestrians may be present
- Vehicles fitted with reversing alarms and cameras; pedestrian exclusion zones during all reversing
- High-vis vests and safety helmets worn by all persons in vehicle manoeuvring areas
- Ground-bearing capacity and gradient assessed; vehicle and trailer combinations only manoeuvred by trained, experienced drivers
- Load securing verified before movement; vehicle speeds reduced to a safe walking pace during manoeuvres
A residual risk rating is then assigned to each hazard, demonstrating how effective risk management reduces overall risk to a tolerable level.
